I have these dreams about trains

At least a couple times a week

I wake startled and breathless

I can’t form the words to speak

It takes me a second to recover

I need to take a look around

Each one is different from the other

I wake to hear not a sound

Some are east bound steam trains for the coast

Some are bearing down on me

Some come through the fallen snow

Some are carrying a casket

Some have people inside

Some lay pennies in its path

Some come from the mountainside

I have these dreams about trains

Last call, all aboard, come along now all ye ghosts

And the conductors before me

Are in the bar giving a toast, we have miles to go before we sleep

And there are bridges we need to cross

The woods are lovely, dark and deep

I have these dreams about trains

Some are to reunite lovers

When i see a black plume of smoke

I know they’re safe, in the arms of one another

Some will salute as its passing by

I can feel their engines are running hot
