Worn out from toil I haste to bed

Oh, sweet repose when day is through

I close my eyes, but darkness brings

your shadow to my sightless view

For you and for myself, no quiet find,

But then begins a journey in my head

To work my mind when body’s work’s expired

For then my thoughts — from far where I abide —

Intend a zealous pilgrimage to you

And keep my drooping eyelids open wide

But day by night and night by day

And each, though enemies to either’s reign

Do in concent shake hands to torture me

The one by toil the other to complain

How far I toil still farther off from where you are

When day’s oppression is not eased by night

When in disgrace with fortune’s eyes

I all alone beweep my state

And when I look upon myself

I curse my fate, I curse my fate

But all the same the dark is bright

I curse and bless this day by night
