I took the front door in

But I had to take the back door out

I took the front door in

But I had to take that back door out

I was sleeping very peacefully

When all of a sudden, I heard a shout

Now, I grabbed my clothes

Didn’t even take time to dress

I grabbed my hat, my coat, my shoes

And my money of course

I didn’t even take time to dress

Yes, I was running so fast

I didn’t even have time to rest

I ran through the alley

I cut across the lot

I took a quick look behind me

But then I heard the shot

I kept runnin' to my house

Put the lock on the door

That woman had a husband

I’m not going back there anymore

I thought she was my woman

But she was somebody else’s wife

I took the front door in

And I almost most my life
